Merbau, also known as Ironwood, is imported as kiln-dried lumber, directly kiln-dried and planed to achieve a moisture content of 12-15%, ensuring high product stability and a smooth surface texture after planing. Custom-made lumber products undergo processing, drying, and planing. Due to the inherent moisture content of the raw logs, the drying time needs to be estimated, resulting in longer preparation time. If drying is not considered, the planed surface may become rough or fuzzy.
Merbau originates from the South Pacific and Southeast Asia. Merbau's longitudinal section may contain some golden yellow deposits, with a specific gravity of 0.7-0.9. Merbau has a hard texture and a glossy surface after planing. Merbau is difficult to inject preservatives into it. Due to variations in its growth area and environmental climate, Merbau can range in color from deep brown to light yellow-brown, all of which are considered normal. Color discrepancies in Ironwood can be improved with the application of protective wood paint, which tends to become more similar over time due to oxidation.
Merbau has a corrosive effect on ordinary iron components, so Merbau is preferable to use stainless steel during construction. Additionally, due to its natural organizational characteristics, Merbau may release red-colored liquid when in contact with water, causing staining on contact surfaces. Therefore, it is recommended to avoid using it on light-colored terrazzo or marble countertops.
